FEDS - Federal officers.

FENCE - Someone who buys and sells stolen goods.

INFO BRO - An information broker.

INJUN COUNTRY - Enemy territory.

INPUT - Girlfriend.

INSERTION - Delivery of a group to its target.

IN THE HUNT - (Motorcyclist) To be a strong contender.

MAKING BANK - To make money, usually illegally.

MAN - Cop, policeman.

MARK - (gang) A want-to-be gang member.

MATCHBOX - A sleep cube or coffin.

MAXIMUM, MAX - Good, superlative.

MEAT PUPPET - A prostitute whose consciousness is wired into a braindance/simstim unit while customers have sex with her.

MUSHI - (Jap.) Computer glitch, or bug.

NEH? - (Jap.) Expression meaning, "Right?", tacked onto the end of a sentence.

NETRUN - To interface with the 'Net and use it to hack into Data Fortresses.

NEUTRALIZE - Kill. Assassinate.

NINER - A nine millimeter gun.

NINJO - (Jap.) Compassion or empathy. Often used with "giri," obligation, to describe Japanese conflict between one's duty and one's feelings; a central theme in Japanese literature. Both are favorite terms of traditional Yakuza.

NIPPERS - Handcuffs.

N.O.E. - Nap-Of-the-Earth flying. Flying as low as possible to avoid radar.

NUDIE - Personnel targets without ACPA or exoskeletons.

ONE LARGE - A one hundred dollar bill.

OP - Operation.

ORGANISKAYA - (Rus.) The Russian Mafia.

WISE GUYS - The Mafia.

WRAITH - 1. A sniper. 2. A stealth aircraft.

YONO - (Kor.) A person who is scum, lowlife (from Yonomoseki).

YUBITSUME - (Jap.) The ritual act within the Yakuza of slicing the joint off the little finger to atone for a mistake.

ZEROED - To die. To be killed.

ZIP GUN - A homemade firearm.

ZOMBIE - A nihilist.

ZONEDANCE - Dancing turned into a dominance game. The dancer tries to persuade, by charisma, talent, or violence, other dancers within his zone to conform to his movements. Challenging because other dancers are often listening to other music via cyberaudio.

Rio: Zona de Guerra - Uma Resenha

Rio: Zona de Guerra é um livro de Leo Lopes, e que aborda, em um romance noir, a temática cyberpunk.

Em alguns aspectos o livro me lembra "Silicone XXI", a que Alfredo Sirkis insistia em chamar de "Noir Futurista".

Me parece que o livro de Lopes é algo entre o cyberpunk e o noir, então, o que me alegra, pois entendo que ambas as temáticas casam-se entre si de forma bastante interessante.

Quando "O Movimento" (isto é, o grupo de escritores que depois foram batizados poor um editor de "cyberpunkers")se iniciou, eles se davam vários nomes, o mais conhecido é o de "Neuromancistas".


A estética urbana, os conflitos sociais, a economia, a radicalização nas diferenças entre extremos da sociedade, uma discussão sobre o que era o corpo e a mente, a fragilização dos poderes e a alta tecnologia eram os enfoques principais desses primeiros livros e contos. O noir, desde muito cedo, com personagens detetivescos, como em Blade Runner, foram bastante utilizados e só gradualmente a cibern´etica dos "cybers" passou a ser mais envolvida nas narrativas.

Uma das coisas que apreciei no livro é que, apesar da discussão de corpo e mente, bem aparecerem durante a narrativa, com algumas idéias bem assustadoras, o autor conseguiu pegar essa veia urbana decadente (materialmente, na Zona de Guerra, e moralmente, no "lado seguro da fronteira") magistralmente.

O personagem principal é o detetive Freitas, um auto-exilado para a Zona de Guerra que cansou do modo de vida em um "condominio" gigantesco por toda a barra da tijuca, que, isolado das mazelas da população em geral, se transformou em uma espécie de cidade-estado de luxo.

Neste condomínio o Governo tem poucos poderes, e quem é o real braço forte do pedaço são as grandes corporações, fortemente armadas e se protegendo das gangues da Zona de Combate como podem.

O preconceito é uma arma das mais seguras contra o restante da população, já que justifica atos de assassinato e crimes em geral contra os bárbaros.

Na zona de guerra as pessoas sovbrevivem como podem. Em uma cidade parcialmente inundada pela subida das marés, gangues dominam e disputam bairros e regiões, e cada vizinhança se defende como pode.

O Rio, pelo que aponta o livro, não é a única cidade com "Zonas de Guerra", já que cidades como Recife (entre outras)enfrentam problemas similares.

No meio de tudo isso, o nosso detetive, acima citado, permeia entre os dois espaços, contornando as armadilhas corporativas que o tentam impedir de desvendar o assassinato/ suicídio de uma prostituta enquanto usa o suporte de amigos na Zona de Guerra, sempre ao Lado de Princesa, uma pistola capaz de fazer Dirty Harry chorar de inveja feito uma menininha.

Há algumas reviravoltas na trama, boas cenas de ação e perseguição e um bom número de personagens marcantes, como um pós-adoescente gênio e Vivian... (Ah, a Vivian...!)a "femme fatale" da aventura, e um dos interesses românticos de Freitas ao lado de Renata, uma advogada em eterno conflito entre seus ideais e a vida tranquila dentro do condomínio.

Nem preciso dizer que é um livrom que qualquer bom leitor de cyberpunk tenda a gostar.

Problemas com o livro:
Sim, eu sou um daqueles resenhistas chatos que encontram defeito em tudo, mas faz parte:

Só UM problema foi detectado, pelo entusiasta que vos fala: Tamanho do livro.

Primeiramente porque o autor tem excelentes idéias e soluções, e o livro acabou quando estava ficando mais empolgado. O fato de eu ter lido até as três da manha sem dúvida que "encurtaram" um pouco a leitura, mas, a sério, é uma boa obra e queria ter tido mais tempo de leitura em cima dela.

Isso não é uma falha grave. O livro na edição da Editora Avec ganhou até um capítulo a mais (o capitulo 17 nessa impressão foi incluido depois da primeira publicação, ambas disponíveis na Amazon, para comparação).

Mas quando se conta uma boa história, alguns pontos poderiam ter mais demora, como o romance e o jogo de sedução entre o detetive e uma de suas musas.

Isso, de modo algum, compromete o prazer da leitura, só nos deixa orfãos mais cedo do que gostaríamos. Espero, de coração, que o autor faça mais livros em breve sobre  o gênero.

Em tempo, como sempre é bom esclarecer, eu sou um entusiasta de cyberpunk. Quando o Artur Vecchi falou do livro pela primeira vez em uma comunidade, gostei, de cara da proposta. É sempre bom esclarecer que fiz questão de comprar as DUAS edições do livro e que meus elogios são sinceros. Vida longa ao Cyberpunk nacional!

Rio: Zona de Guerra - Arma Pacificadora 3000 para Cyberpunk 2020

Então, tou começando a ler (e gostar) o "Rio: Zona de Guerra" de Leo Lopes, indicação do Artur Vecchi, autor do RPG "Monstros".

A historia gira em torno das diferenças sociais e "emparedamento" físico separando condomínios de altíssimo luxo do "resto" (a chamada Zona de Guerra).

Zonas de guerra são um tema comum na literatura e na filmografia Cyberpunk, e são locais aonde a polícia tem pouqu[issimo ou nenhum acesso, dada a escalada de violência. Se o leitor pensou nos morros cariocas ou em certos locais da periferia paulistana, pensou  certo.

Cyberpunk pode ser definidad de várias formas, e o "cyber" na definição, na verdade, é menos importante, para mim, do que as discussões sobre sociedade e valores de sobrevivencia em estados que vão de Huxley  a Orwell, muitas vezes coma banalização da dura realidade convivendo com um estado autoritário.

É o caso, até onde estou lendo, de Zona de Guerra, e recomendo (de novo). Bom pontapé inicial da editora Avec (www.avecstore.com.br)

Enfim, aos fãs de cyberpunk, uma arma que apaece logo no inicio do livro é uma tal "Pacificadora 3000" que curti bastante.

Como o livro é sem figuras (passei da idade de ler livros ilustrados (apesar da minha esposa certamente poder me desmentir), então escolhi como imagem a arma clássica de }Blade Runner.
De resto só usei idéias do livro para brincar.

KURO: Conto "Cidade Elétrica" Traduzido

O Rodrigo Campos (Aka "Bigg") camarada responsável pela tradução do Kuro (Sobrenatural Cyberpunk/ Japonês, que será lançado pela editora New Order), liberou a primeira parte do conto "Cidade Elétrica" da ambientação.

Eu tenho tecido inúmeros elogios a este RPG, e a leitura do mesmo dá um pouco do gosto do que me animou nesse jogo.

Kuro: Novo Robô - Ronin

A primeira vez que coloquei um desafio maior em uma mesa, com personagens enfrentando um robô "Yojimbo" tive de ignorar alguns dados para não transformar a mesa em uma TPK -Total Party Kill, aquelas mesas em que todos os personagens morrem, já que ele era um osso bem duro de roer.

(E sim, eu sei que em teoria um Yojimbo não deveria matar humanos se não fosse necessário, mas dentro da aventura era).

Como a mesa era com jogadores iniciantes, ainda, tanto no RPG quanto no sistema, matar todo mundo era uma opção que não trazia nenhum benefício concreto em termos de experiência.

Para os que forem iniciar jogadores em KURO minha sugestão é a de que tomem cuidado com os primeiros desafios, então resolvi criar uma versão mais "light" do Yojimbo para as mesas.

Segue "Ronin" - robô de segurança não oficial, mais barato e mais fraco como desafio mais fácil para personagens.
Preço: 900.000 yen (não defini Kaiso aqui, mas acho que 2 + está bom)

 Ronin (TM) é produzido pela NAKATOMI CYBERNETICS, e sua bateria dura cerca de 2 horas com uma bateria comum, ou 4 com uma bateria especial. Em geral eles ficam de guarda ligados a tomadas e se revezam em turnos de 2 autômatos na segurança de uma casa.  Ele vem em geral nas cores azul, branca, verde, vermelha ou amarela.

Uma opção mais viável é o aluguel de uma máquina dessas. Cada dia de aluguel sai por 100.000 yens sem um técnico para manutenção, ou 150.000 yens  com técnico e seguro contra danos.
